YOUth Review: Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney

Sometimes I Lie is told through the perspective of Amber Reynolds through three different timelines. The first time the readers meet her, she is in a coma from a car accident. She is a prisoner in her own body, she cannot speak but she is completely aware of everything around her. She remembers her life, however many gaps are discovered in her memory leading up to the accident. A man that she thinks should be familiar to her visits her many times, each time leaving the reader more confused and on edge. The second timeline is building up to her accident, just a week before. This is where we see her struggling marriage with her husband, Paul. The final timeline is when she is only 11 years old. This timeline is told through diary entries. During this time her complicated relationship with her even more complicated sister is unveiled and explained. I enjoyed the closeness in two of the gaps in the timeline as it helped build suspense and also made it easier to follow and understand. This book contains twists that make the reader double-check and reread in complete shock. The book has many complicated layers, giving more information, leaving the reader satisfied and thinking they have figured it out, however, it all turns out to be a lie. The twist is further than anyone would have guessed but it perfectly ties everything together. Overall, the writing will keep you on the edge of your seat and maintain your interest. This is a very twisted, mysterious, and shocking novel making it a very enjoyable read.
