Staff Review – An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power by Al Gore

A sequel to An Inconvenient Truth, Vice-President Al Gore updates and revises his original work from 2007. Gore’s book is not a simple presentation of facts around the climate crisis, but a call to action. He offers specific actions we can take as individuals. While the book has an American focus when it comes to political action, there is a lot of nonpolitical advice (and the general message of “become more active politically” is still relevant for non-Americans). An Inconvenient Sequel is a much-needed update from An Inconvenient Truth, as even in the 10 years since the first book the Earth has undergone many climate-related changes and catastrophes. Gore outlines a number of them, but, importantly, he relates the science around
each change and connects them to the larger picture of a planet undergoing crisis.
The book itself is attractively laid out with a lot of pictures and colourful charts amid the text.
Like the original book, Gore understands that visualization is important to convey information on
a complex topic in a manageable way. Despite this, the information is not simple by any
measure; Gore does not shy from providing concrete and complex data when necessary. While
the book is a few years old, it is still a helpful resource and will hopefully receive another update
in the near future.
