The Summer I Turned Pretty follows the main character Belly, whose favourite time of the year is summer, and only summer. Every year when school’s out Belly and her family go to the summer house with Susannah; Belly’s mom’s friend, and her two sons Conrad and Jeremiah. They’ve known each other for countless summers, but this time it’s a different one.
After hearing so many people say this book is great and seeing it’s by the author of one of my favourite book series, I decided to read it. I personally liked this book, but it wasn’t my favourite that I’ve read. I found that the main character Belly wasn’t the most interesting and acted immature in some situations. The other characters were okay, and the book was still readable and enjoyable! Another part of the book that was interesting was the format. It went from past to present very quickly and sometimes in odd patterns, so it took a while to get used to it and figure out what was happening.
Overall, this book did have some upsides like the beach/beach house setting which I like. I will be reading the next two books in the trilogy to see where the story ends up, but as far as this book alone goes I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
