YOUth Review: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

book coverThe Song of Achilles is based in Greek mythology times, featuring two protagonists named Achilles and Patroclus who embark on an incredible journey together; they meet through unusual circumstances and become inseparable. Together they are trained by Chiron, a wise centaur who specializes in the art of medicine and war, and when an announcement comes that Helen of  Sparta has been kidnapped, all warriors are to participate in a war to grant Helen her freedom.  This surprising statement tests the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles and requires an unforgiving sacrifice.

This book is one of my favourite books that I’d highly recommend. You don’t need to have any background knowledge about Greek mythology to truly enjoy this book. The writing style that Miller communicates with is a pleasure to read; I find I’m picky about the way an author words and writes things, so reading this book was a delight. She creates such vivid imagery and makes a firm character and personality for every character. The characters are such loveable people and can make you connect with them better while reading. I enjoyed reading this book very much.
