YOUth Review: The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

The Sun Is Also A Star book cover“The Sun Is Also A Star” is a charmingly written, page-turning, on edge read. It encircles 2 teens who fatefully meet from a life-saving experience and then spend a momentous 12 hour day together in New York City.

Korean-American Daniel has aspirations of becoming a poet but feels he is obligated to please his parents by attending his college interview to become a Yale Alumni. Meanwhile, Jamaican-American Natasha only has 24 hours left before she and her family are deported to Jamaica. Both teens have entirely different opinions on love and life, but throughout the story, they evolve and become open to different views.

Nicola Yoon knows how to catch your attention and pique your curiosity with quick chapters that provide point-of-views from each teenager. Each page has thoughts and ideas that will make you pause for thought, and will change your perspective when thinking about topics like love and fate (mixed in with a bit of science and history). Yoon thoroughly understands how to create well-developed characters with personality traits and interests that are sure to entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat.

We meet Natasha who is a strong, smart, realistic, science-based thinker, and Daniel who is more the type of person who believes in big dreams and goals. Both characters are first-handily not pictured as a get-along couple, but Yoon knows how to bring them together while learning a lesson or two along the way.

This story holds countless quotes and thoughts that you will without doubt hold in your head and heart for some time and will leave you wanting more. It is a great read for anyone who enjoys light-hearted novels revolving around fate, love, and profound thinking.
